Madrid Gallery Weekend 2026

Madrid Gallery Weekend 2026: Art Takes Over Madrid Again

Every September, Madrid welcomes one of those events that changes the way you look at the city.

Galleries unveil new exhibitions, extend their opening hours and contemporary art takes centre stage in the city’s cultural agenda. From 10 to 13 September 2026, Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend brings together more than 60 galleries for its 17th edition, marking the start of Madrid’s new contemporary art season.

Four days to discover new proposals, revisit familiar names and experience Madrid through contemporary art.

In the Salamanca district, where art, architecture, fashion and design come together, that perspective finds one of its most natural settings. Tótem Madrid, a luxury boutique hotel on Calle de Hermosilla in Madrid’s Salamanca district, sits within this cultural and creative side of the neighbourhood.

What is Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend?

Organised by Arte Madrid, the Association of Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries of Madrid, Apertura marks the beginning of the new exhibition season each year.

Since 2009, the event has brought together artists, gallerists, collectors, curators, institutions and the public around contemporary art.

Its main appeal lies in the format itself.

There is no single venue or set route. The galleries are spread across different parts of Madrid, allowing each visitor to create their own itinerary.

One exhibition can lead to another. One address can reveal a new street. And what seems like a short visit can easily turn into an entire afternoon.

The full programme for the edition can be found on the official Arte Madrid website

When is Madrid Gallery Weekend 2026?

The 2026 edition takes place from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 September, with extended opening hours at participating galleries:

  • Thursday 10 September: 1:30 pm to 10:00 pm
  • Friday 11 September: 11:00 am to 8:00 pm
  • Saturday 12 September: 11:00 am to 8:00 pm
  • Sunday 13 September: 11:00 am to 2:00 pm

Participating galleries are free to visit and open to the public, although some guided activities and special events may require registration.

The programme also continues throughout September with talks, visits and activities linked to contemporary art.

Among them are the return of the ARCO GalleryWalks, routes organised by Fundación ARCO to discover some of the participating galleries accompanied by art specialists.

The 2026 edition also maintains its connection with Latin America, strengthening the dialogue between Madrid’s art scene and international professionals, institutions and artists.

More than 60 galleries across Madrid

Apertura offers the opportunity to experience contemporary art without having to follow a single route.

Painting, photography, sculpture, installations and other forms of artistic expression come together in very different spaces. Some galleries have been part of Madrid’s art scene for decades; others represent new generations and different ways of understanding creativity.

Trying to see everything may not be the best way to experience it.

One of the great things about Gallery Weekend is precisely the freedom to choose. Select a few exhibitions, leave some time between them and allow Madrid to complete the journey.

Because part of the experience also happens outside the galleries.

In a bookshop you come across along the way. On a façade that makes you stop for a moment. On a terrace. In a conversation that continues after an exhibition.

Art sets the direction. The city does the rest.

The Salamanca district has an eye for art too

The Salamanca district is often immediately associated with fashion, but its cultural identity goes far beyond its shop windows.

Contemporary art galleries, historic architecture, museums and design spaces form part of the neighbourhood’s cultural landscape.

During Apertura, the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, on Calle Serrano, joins the programme with an outdoor sculpture exhibition, while galleries in and around the district offer a natural starting point before  continuing towards other artistic hubs across Madrid.

Salesas, Centro, Lavapiés and Doctor Fourquet offer different perspectives on the same scene.

There is no single way to explore it.

For visitors staying in Salamanca, this makes it possible to begin with the neighbourhood’s cultural landmarks before following the programme into other parts of Madrid.

Tótem Madrid in the cultural heart of Salamanca

Tótem Madrid’s connection with the city begins with its location in the Salamanca district. From Calle de Hermosilla, art, fashion, gastronomy, architecture and design are part of the surrounding neighbourhood.

Set within a restored 19th-century building, the luxury boutique hotel combines historic Madrid with a contemporary approach to design, creating a natural base for experiencing the cultural life of the city.

Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend fits naturally into this way of experiencing Madrid. Not only because of the exhibitions, but also because of the conversations they generate and the connections between art, architecture and urban life.

For a stay centred on Madrid’s galleries, museums and Salamanca neighbourhood, the rooms and suites at Tótem Madrid provide a quieter base between one part of the city and the next.

September begins with new perspectives

Apertura marks the beginning of a new cultural season in Madrid.

More than 60 galleries. Dozens of exhibitions. Artists, professionals and visitors sharing the same streets for a few days.

You don’t need to know every name or complete a list.

Perhaps all you need is to choose your first gallery.

And let Madrid take it from there.
